With the January transfer window set to slam shut in the coming days, clubs up and down the Bundesliga will finally be able to put to rest the distracting drama of transfer rumours and enticing offers for their players. And with a return to the actual football being played on the pitches, now seems like a good time to take a look at which head coaches have over and underperformed in the German top-flight to date.
However, rather than take a glance at the league table or read the tea leaves of social media sentiment, I’ve instead decided to rank each manager in the Bundesliga based on a power rankings system that I have created from scratch. And, hopefully, it will make some amount of sense and offer up some intriguing results.
The Methodology
In a previous life I used to cover Scottish football for one of the major newspapers in the country, the Glasgow Herald, before moving on to the BBC. During that period, I also helped run a newsletter very similar to this one, which dived into the numbers behind the Scottish Premiership. As part of that, I designed a power rankings system that strived to accurately gauge how well a football manager was doing in his job, based on more specific metrics than fan sentiment or current form.
