Werder Bremen have been one of the best stories of the Hinrunde. On Saturday, Die Werderaner beat Union Berlin 4-1 thanks to goals by Marco Grüll (13’, 17’), Mitchell Weiser (45’) and Jens Stage (87’). Andras Schäfer (23’) made it briefly interesting for the visitors.

The result saw Werder finish in seventh place ahead of the winter break. With 25 points, Werder have the same number of points as fifth-placed Mainz and sixth-placed Dortmund and sits just two points behind third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt and fourth-placed RB Leipzig.

Werder’s 25 points at this stage of the season are already the most points collected in a Hinrunde (first half of the season) in 13 years. In 2012/12, Werder had 29 points after the conclusion of the Hinrunde. With wins over Heidenheim and RB Leipzig, Bremen could best that result.
