The lingering promise of Georginio Rutter
The Hoffenheim star has all the talent in the world but he's struggled to show it in Sinsheim this season
No player perhaps embodied Hoffenheim’s disappointing end to the season quite as well as Georginio Rutter on Saturday afternoon. Despite taking the lead, André Breitenreiter’s side were ultimately overpowered by an increasingly impressive Wolfsburg side and ultimately succumbed to their fifth defeat in the final seven Bundesliga games of the year. The Sinsheim side subsequently slumped to eleventh in the table and for Rutter that was only the start of his troubles.
Coming off late on in the second half, his head coach confirmed after the match that the young forward had suffered a number of blows to his ankle and would now likely miss his upcoming commitments with the France U21 side. While other stars like Andrej Kramaric and Robert Skov can put domestic disappointments to the back of their mind as they hop on flights to Qatar, Rutter will be forced to stay put and come to terms with what has been an inconsistent and disappointing season to date.
Indeed, after 15 league appearances for his side this season, the 20-year-old centre forward has managed just two goals and three assists. When we break that down into per 90 averages it works out at just 0.17 goals and 0.17 assists. Which is some way short of the 0.41 goals and 0.21 assists Rutter was averaging last season. However, the young forward isn’t the only person around Hoffenheim that is struggling to find some consistency.
