There was a glimpse into the future on Wednesday night at Audi Field for Bayern Munich fans. For the first time, head coach Julian Nagelsmann fielded a team without star striker Robert Lewandowski. The Polish forward left the club ahead of the US Tour and joined Barcelona for €45 million plus add-ons.

No Lewandowski then against D.C. United. Not that the Polish forward was really needed against the Major League Soccer side as the Rekordmeister smashed the club from the US capital 2-6. Furthermore, there was a forward on the field; young Lucas Copado got the nod, flanked by Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané, and new signing Sadio Mané.

“Perhaps I will have to score them,” midfielder Joshua Kimmich said jokingly at a club event during the US Tour. When asked whether Gnabry would be predestined to take over a more central role in Bayern’s play, Kimmich added with a big smile on his face: “That sounds great; I think you should take over the bench and implement it.”
