It is the biggest contract in German football history. On Valentine’s Day, Jamal Musiala agreed to take his relationship with Bayern Munich to the next level, signing a deal that will keep him with the club until 2030. It is a gigantic deal. Musiala will earn €25 million gross a season and receive a sign-on fee, which is understood to be around €20m. The deal also includes an exit clause worth €175m, starting next summer and going down to just €100m ahead of the final year of his contract.

"It took time, but I'm extremely happy that it's done,” Musiala said in an interview published on Bayern’s homepage on Friday. “Now, for me, it's about taking steps forward year by year, achieving a lot with the team, and continuing to grow together. The last 4-5 years here have been really nice. I feel excellent here with the team, the coaching staff and also the fans. I'm looking forward to the coming years when we will hopefully be able to achieve a lot.”

The successful conclusion of the contract talks with Musiala certainly feels like a gigantic win for Bayern Munich. But some questions remain. What does the existence of an exit clause mean for future contract talks? Why did Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen lead the talks? Where does this leave director of sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund? I try to answer all this and more in a quick Q&A using questions from the Substack community. Enjoy!
