It is a transfer that now seems inevitable. Konrad Laimer will join Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023. It is a deal that could be announced as early as January 1, when the player is free to officially negotiate with other clubs. In truth, a deal might have been in place ever since last summer when Bayern failed to sign the Austrian midfielder from RB Leipzig.
At the time Leipzig stood firm, blocking any potential deal that could see the 25-year-old Austrian national team player move south to the Säbener Straße in Munich. For Leipzig, who had already lost Marcel Sabitzer, Dayot Upamecano and head coach Julian Nagelsmann to the Rekordmeister, it was almost a point of principle; they were not going to lose another talent to Bayern.
In hindsight, Leipzig may wonder whether they should have taken the money after all. Bayern will also have some thoughts on the sensibility of signing yet another midfielder. But one step at a time, as we try to break down Laimer’s impending move from Leipzig to Bayern.
