Joshua Kimmich: What happens next after Bayern Munich withdrew their contract offer?
Last week, Bayern Munich reportedly withdrew their contract offer to Joshua Kimmich. Where do the player and the club go from here? We answer all those questions.
After signing Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies to new long-term contracts, Joshua Kimmich was supposed to be the next domino to fall. Kimmich and director of sport Max Eberl had a verbal agreement in place for a deal that would have run until 2028 and be worth €20 million a season.
The supervisory board then met last week to discuss the Kimmich contract situation. At that meeting, it was decided that the club would withdraw the offer. As is always the case at Bayern, it isn't easy to piece together what exactly was discussed and how the final decision was made.
Some sources suggest that the supervisory board was ready to agree to the deal. But at least one source has also suggested that there has been some significant concern over the size of the agreement Eberl has offered. That source also indicated that Eberl is “very good at spending other people’s money.”
There were certainly some concerns about the package of the deal. But the biggest problem has been that Kimmich hasn’t responded to the contract offer at all. Ultimately, the club wanted an answer about whether Kimmich wanted to stay or not ahead of the crucial Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen. That hope remained even after the deal was withdrawn last week, but there was no movement over the weekend.
