It felt like a ruthless decision from the outside. Within moments of Bayern Munich having secured their 11th Bundesliga title in a row, the news made the rounds that the board had sacked CEO Oliver Kahn and director of sport Hasan Salihamidzic. “Is this coming now?,” said Thomas Müller minutes after the final whistle to Sky Germany. “A minute after the final whistle? I didn't know anything about it until now." Rumors of the sacking appeared during the game as CEO Kahn was not present in Cologne.
Bayern Munich’s decision-makers initially explained via a statement to the Deutsche Presse Agentur that Kahn was not in Cologne because of a cold. But then the former CEO took to Twitter, stating that the club prohibited him from traveling with the team to their final match of the season.
Salihamidzic, in the meantime, was at the game in Cologne and also present on Sunday as the women’s team beat 1. FC Turbine Potsdam 11-1 to also secure the title. Gegenpressing learned about his dismissal halfway through the 1. FC Köln game from a source directly familiar with the situation.
