HSV beat St. Pauli 4-3: Three thoughts from a wild Hamburger Stadtderby
HSV have beaten rivals St. Pauli in the Hamburger Stadtderby. But what does that mean? Here are three quick thoughts!
Hamburger SV have won the 109th Stadtderby against rivals St. Pauli in the most dramatic fashion, preserving their promotion hopes. St. Pauli’s dramatic run, which saw them close the gap to the promotion spots, has come to an end. Like boxers trading punches, the two teams went at one another from the start. St. Pauli took the lead thanks to a goal by Manolis Saliakis but Jonas David (44’) equalized just before the break.
Then, HSV seemed to run away with it when Bakery Jatta (48’) and Moritz Heyer (52’) scored just after halftime. More goals followed; however, Elias Saad made it 3-2 in the 71st minute before St. Pauli’s Jakov Medic scored an own goal (42’) to make it 4-2 for HSV. Just one minute later, St. Pauli pulled one back when Jackson Irvine scored. That goal led to a dramatic last ten minutes in which HSV were able to hang on, securing three points that will see them leapfrog Heidenheim into second place. Here are three thoughts from a wild Stadtderby.
