When Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach lock horns, all common sense seems to go flying out the window. In true Der Klassiker tradition - unlike the one-sided nonsense that often sums up any clash between the Munich giants and Borussia Dortmund - Gladbach seem to transform into a purpose-built machine, designed to frustrate the German champions. Foals they may be in the tunnel ahead of kick off, but Gladbach often turn into lions when they step onto the pitch at the Allianz Arena.
Such was the case on Saturday, when Daniel Farke’s side drove Julian Nagelsmann and his Munich Globetrotters to the verge of insanity with their defensive heroics. Sure, Bayern’s xG was bigger than your average Premier League wage bill and Yann Sommer quite literally broke records between the posts, but even those 95 minutes of madness showcased how far Gladbach have come under Farke in a relatively short period of time. Bayern may have deserved to win the game, but at the end of the day Gladbach did enough to stop them. And that was no fluke.
