From class enemy to comrade - The strange friendship between Uli Hoeneß and St. Pauli
Uli Hoeneß was once a Klassenfeind for St. Pauli fans. Now he is not only a saviour but also an investor in St. Pauli's stadium.
Guido Schröter is an important institution in German football. The cartoonist has a weekly cartoon in Die Süddeutsche Zeitung called Fußballgötter that appears in every Saturday edition. But before Schröter published for the likes of 11Freunde and SZ, he drew comics mostly about St. Pauli.
There is one particular comic that stood out—we get to this in a moment. This was back in the 1990s when St. Pauli against Bayern Munich wasn’t just a game but a culture war. For the left-leaning fans of St. Pauli, the rich Bohemian club from Bavaria was nothing but the Klassenfeind (class enemy).
