False advertisement? Why Dortmund against Bayern isn't really a Klassiker

On Saturday, the world will witness the latest edition of 'Der Klassiker'. But was Dortmund against Bayern ever a Klassiker? Indeed, is it perhaps false advertising? A brief history.

On Saturday, Borussia Dortmund will face Bayern Munich in what might be a last-ditch chance to create some sort of narrative that the title race is still alive in the Bundesliga. Just to put it in perspective, even with a win, Dortmund would still have a five-point gap to overcome.

Given that there are only ten games left following the match, it seems extremely unlikely. It also won’t stop the marketing machine from trying to proclaim this match as Der Klassiker. A match between two giants of German football.

There are several problems with classifying Dortmund versus Bayern Munich as ‘Der Klassiker’, presumably the German version of El Clásico. The biggest problem is that Dortmund haven’t won a Bundesliga title since 2012.
