Edin Terzic doesn't know how to get the best out of Karim Adeyemi
Once considered one of Germany's most promising forwards, Karim Adeyemi has regressed at Dortmund under a head coach that doesn't seem to know how to get the best out of his talents.
If Borussia Dortmund fans needed any confirmation of their side’s underwhelming start to the season, it came in the form of Julian Nagelsmann’s first Germany squad. Announced late last week, the former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich head coach excluded a number of the senior stars that Edin Terzic has come to rely on through thick and thin.
A return for Mats Hummels certainly raised a few eyebrows, but the omission of Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck all but confirmed to many fans of the Westfalenstadion side that despite their recent win over Unin Berlin, their head coach simply isn’t getting the best out of his more defensive talents. However, the biggest red flag unquestionably came in the form of Karim Adeyemi’s demotion to the Germany U21 squad.
Considering the fact that the Munich-born talent hasn’t featured for the U21 squad in over two years, it may seem like a cruel move to force Adeyemi to drop back into the youth team and seemingly earn his spot among the senior squad all over again. The official line is that he’ll drop down to get game time and “to take on responsibilities and lead a young group”. However, when we consider the forward’s lack of any real progress in Dortmund since he joined the club last July, it’s not hard to see why someone like Nagelsmann may think the young talent has actually regressed at the Bundesliga side.
Indeed, the numbers speak for themselves. Over the course of 39 games, Adeyemi has managed just nine goals and six assists. And so far this season the (former) Germany international has failed to register a single goal or assists in seven games. Not great for a player Dortmund paid no less than €30 million to sign and didn’t even get off the bench in Saturday’s 4-2 victory.
