A three times DDR Oberliga champion, Magdeburg found themselves in the third division Oberliga Nordost/Staffel Mitte after reunification. If promoted, Magdeburg would become the first club from Saxony-Anhalt to play in the Bundesliga. But while Magdeburg sit in third place with 49 points, three clubs, SV Elversberg, Paderborn 07 and Fortuna Düsseldorf are in a tight chase with 48 points each.
