Cologne, Germany - Borussia Dortmund made it two wins from two in 2024, following up last week’s 3-0 win in freezing Darmstadt with a 4-0 win in even colder Cologne. Donyell Malen scored twice on either side of half-time, first converting a clever Julian Brandt corner and then latching onto Ian Maatsen’s long ball on the counter-attack. In between, Niclas Füllkrug scored Dortmund’s second from the penalty spot after Jadon Sancho, making his first start since June 2023, was brought down in the box. Cologne, having only scored 11 goals all season and missing all three regular strikers through injury, deserved credit for trying to play possession-based football under new head coach Timo Schultz but – aside from a Linton Maina shot that came back off the post – were sorely lacking in quality. Like in Darmstadt last week, Youssoufa Moukoko came off the bench to score another in injury time.
