Can Max Eberl establish a new Golden Generation at Bayern Munich?

There was almost a sense of relief when Bayern Munich finally made official what had been an open secret for months. Former Gladbach and RB Leipzig boss Max Eberl will return to the club of his youth as the board member of sport starting March 1. But there is a sense that the ghost of Eberl has been in and around the Bayern HQ at the Säbener Straße for much longer.

At this point, it feels like godfather Uli Hoeneß has been looking for a true successor to his well-established Bayern empire for over a decade. And unlike the HBO series Succession [SPOILER ALERT] - where Tom Wambsgans, played by the brilliant Matthew Macfayden, emerges as the surprise victor - at Bayern, it always felt like Eberl was going to be the man to succeed Hoeneß.

The problem has been that for too long, Eberl has been a reluctant participant in Hoeneß’s succession planning. As a result, the club’s succession planning has written its own script that could easily rival any HBO drama series. Whether it was Christoph Nerlinger, Michael Reschke or Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn, Hoeneß & Co. have given many potential successors a run at guiding the club just to take back control in the end.
