It was a frustrating evening for Marcus Thuram and Borussia Mönchengladbach overall. The Foals were eliminated by 2. Bundesliga side SV Darmstadt 98 in the second round of the DFB Pokal, and the striker had a rather pedestrian performance, completing just 72% of his passes and although he completed all his dribbles and had 41 touches, he managed just one shot on goal.

“We’re incredibly disappointed,” Gladbach head coach Daniel Farke said to the press after the game. “After the break, we stayed patient and got our equalizer, but after that there were five or six occasions where we missed the final pass. When you don’t take these opportunities to go in front, you have to be flawless in defense in order to win the game. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage that.”

Darmstadt had an effective goalscorer in Aaron Seydel. The striker would score the winner in the 79th minute. “Darmstadt capitalized on a mistake in our build-up play to make it 2-1, a goal which was ultimately decisive,” Farke said after the game. “We tried everything in the closing minutes, but our opponents defended passionately and held onto their lead.”

Gladbach have not won the DFB Pokal since 1995 when they had the likes of Stefan Effenberg, Heiko Herrlich, and Martin Dahlin leading the line for them. All three would move on to bigger clubs soon after; Effenberg rejoined Bayern, Herrlich headed to Dortmund, and Dahlin to Roma. And Gladbach have not won a title since.
