At Eintracht Frankfurt, Omar Marmoush is quickly developing into the Bundesliga's next star forward
The Egyptian talent has gone from jack of all trades at Stuttgart and Wolfsburg to potentially one of the most exciting strikers in German football thanks to Eintracht Frankfurt and Dino Toppmöller.
Omar Marmoush departed Wolfsburg for Eintracht Frankfurt a little over one year ago and while the remarks that were made at the time seemed entirely respectable, there was little doubt on Saturday that the Egyptian forward felt as though he had a point to prove. In a game in which the home side tried to outmuscle their opponents, it was the speed and finesse of Frankfurt’s striker duo that ultimately won the day for Dino Toppmöller and his side.
After an opening 30 minutes in which Wolfsburg dominated proceedings, Frankfurt broke free of their host’s pressure and counter-attacked with lightning speed. With a well timed and very amusing knee of the ball, Hugo Larsson set Hugo Ekitike off down the left flank with acres of space to run into, before the French talent quickly curled the ball back towards goal and into the path of Marmoush. At first it seemed as though the pass lacked the pace to give the forward the time and space to do anything with it, but with a deft touch Marmoush lifted the ball over the onrushing Kamil Grabara and watched it bounce into the back of the net.
Wolfsburg would pull a goal back to level the scoring in the second half with a superb shot from Ridle Baku, but not before Marmoush fired two more shots on target towards the opposing goal and demanded strong saves in each occasion from Grabara. Then, just when it felt like both teams would have to settle for a draw, a handball in the Wolfsburg box offered Marmoush the opportunity to score from the spot. And then, against the club that he’d spent six years playing for but had only ever managed a grand total of 48 games, Marmoush stepped up, stuck the ball in the back of the net and unquestionably set the record straight.
