After a hattrick against Bayern, Dani Olmo is ready to lead RB Leipzig to more titles
Dani Olmo was the outstanding player at the DFL Supercup, stealing the show from new Bayern star Harry Kane. But for the Spaniard, the performance was just the beginning of a new era.
It was one of those beautiful moments that wasn’t at first apparent to all in real-time. Dani Olmo received the ball inside the box, seemed to stumble, somehow recovered, turned, and poked the ball through Sven Ulreich’s legs to make it 2-0 for RB Leipzig in the DFL Supercup. It was the 44th minute, it was Olmo’s second goal of the game, and the 25-year-old would complete his hattrick from the penalty spot in the second half.
Perhaps it was the fact that Olmo had just stolen the show from no less than Harry Kane, or perhaps it was the Spaniard’s hattrick. But for some odd reason, watching that second goal live from the Allianz Arena, the magnitude of what Olmo had just done wasn’t quite apparent. It was only the next day that I realized what sort of goal Olmo had scored—on the biggest stage, against Germany’s biggest club on the night that was supposed to belong to their star signing.
Olmo, however, knew. There he was, standing in the mixed zone with a smile on his face, looking like what the Bavarians would call a Lausbub: A young boy who had just played a trick on Bayern. “Well, it was good,” Olmo said with a smirk on his face when asked about his second goal. “But I have scored a lot of beautiful goals. This one, for sure, will have a special place in my memories.”
