2023 is the year Florian Wirtz bounces back at Bayer Leverkusen
The Germany international has looked bright in mid-season training and is exactly what Xabi Alonso's side have been missing in the Bundesliga.
The Bundesliga is finally set to return from its extended winter break and few clubs will be looking forward to stepping back onto the pitch quite as much as Bayer Leverkusen. Although Die Werkself can’t exactly muster the kind of necessary fan support to build up a huge amount of hype ahead of this particularly long rückrunde, their players and poster boy head coach will do their best to make up for it.
Few clubs had as troubling a start to the 2022/23 season, as Leverkusen were forced to bid farewell to a head coach they truly believed in, in the form of Gerardo Seoane, whilst contending with some of their biggest stars either underperforming to rather dramatic degrees or pulling up with major injuries. In other words, Leverkusen simply imploded.
However, that was then and this is now. And the here and now points to a well-rested Leverkusen squad that seems to be gathering confidence under new head coach Xabi Alonso by the day. And, to the delight of fans and perhaps rivals alike, 2023 should see the return of the club’s biggest star: Florian Wirtz.
